Tips for Parents of Toddlers - From Jennifer Walker, "Moms on Call"

Whining
This is just a way that toddlers learn to communicate with us that gets the desired result. It will decrease if it does not produce the desired result.

What to say:
Very calm and matter-of-fact “I do not speak whinese, when you talk to me in a calm, soft voice, like I am using now, then I can help you.”
You may have to repeat this several times. If they are strong willed, then this may turn into a tantrum in an effort to have their own way and get your attention. See tantrum instructions below
If your child continues to whine after being told three times that you do not speak whinese. Then you can move on to the three point teaching technique:
#1 I do not want you to whine,
#2 If you continue to speak that way, you will go into your room for quiet playtime and come out when you are ready to speak in a way that I can understand, (you may insert your own disciplinary technique here)
#3 I want you to speak in your regular sweet voice so I can understand what you are saying.”

If the whining continues then off to the bedroom it is. If this induces a tantrum see tantrum instructions.

What to do:
Between awake and asleep go over the household rules (Obey Daddy and Mommy, Do not hurt yourself and Do not hurt others - those are our three household rules) and tell her something she did right and then tell her about the whining. Tell her that it is frustrating for you when she uses a whiny voice because you cannot understand her and you love the sound of her regular voice. Ask her to say a few things is her regular sweet voice and tell her how much you love to hear that sweet voice, her voice. And then tell her that you will look forward to hearing her sweet voice in the morning.

The “No” stage
Asserting one’s free will is a normal developmental milestone. The good news is if your child is saying “no” frequently, then they are right on track developmentally. The bad news is that it can be frustrating and requires great patience.

What to say:
Every time your toddler says “No” you say “Not “No”, “yes Ma’am (or sir) and do it” Then help them to do what you have asked of them.

What to do:
We cannot do a three point teaching technique every time our child says “no”. We would have no time left in the day at all. What we want to do is to use this time to prepare them for later in their development. This will not make the “no” stop, it will just reset their thinking so that in the future (like after you have said this about 3 million times and they are 3-4 years old) they will automatically know the proper response and they WILL start to respond to it. This is just a learning opportunity. We can use this time to instill the wanted response, which will carry them right into pre-teen years. You will get to the point where they will say “No”. You will raise an eyebrow and they will say “Yes Ma’am” and do it.

Tantrums

If you want a behavior to continue, pay attention to it.

What it is:
Tantrums are a show and this show is all for you. They only continue if they are effective. So if you want your child to have repeated tantrums, then give in. If you would like tantrums to stop, then ignore them.

What to say:
Say “Not in this house” or “We don’t play that” Calmly and firmly.

What to do:
Then place the child in a safe environment and walk away. This will elicit louder screaming at first but do not give in. They can settle down and they will if they do not get any response from you. They learn pretty quickly whether tantrums will work, so ignoring them will ‘nip this in the bud’. It is never too late to start ignoring this behavior. Tantrums need to be ignored. This is not a teachable moment. It is not time to do a three point teaching technique.

When “placing them in a safe environment” they may go double-jointed on you and slip right out of your grasp when you go to pick them up. You can then grasp them firmly at the waist and place them under your arm in a sideways position to carry them to a safe place. Do this silently. You must stay in control and act as if this does not affect you in any way. Place them in a safe area and walk away. Remember, this is not a teachable moment.

If I want to address tantrums between awake and asleep: Try this every night for about a week.

“Our three household rules are Obey Mommy and Daddy, Do not hurt yourself and Do not hurt others. Today you obeyed Mommy by _________________(fill in blank) And…today you had a fit and yelled and screamed and that hurts you and mommy when you behave that way. But I know that you do not have to behave that way because you can listen and do what mommy asks. You can be great at obeying me, that’s just how you are,.I love you, good-night.”

Head banger? This method will decrease the overall number of times your child’s head hits the floor. If we give in, then they will do this more often because they will know that it works. Then, the cumulative number of times the head hits the floor will increase exponentially.

Going out to eat

Toddlers have about a 10-15 minute mealtime tolerance window. So we do not expect them to sit indefinitely while we enjoy long conversation and two cups of coffee. We can, however, make going out to eat a more enjoyable experience.

What to say:
Children want to know what you expect and what will happen. Some misbehavior is because they have no idea how long this may last so they want out immediately.
Prior to going into the restaurant, while you are still in the car say this.
“We are going in to eat. Here is what will happen,
We will sit down at the table and you can play with your __________(fill in blank)
Then we order our food and just before the food comes, we will take a little walk
Then the food comes and we eat and when we are done you can play some more and we will leave.
Don’t forget our household rules apply here.
Obey Daddy and Mommy,
Do not hurt yourself and do not hurt others.”

What to do:
Ask the waiter to let you know a few minutes before the food is supposed to arrive, if you tell them that this will help your toddler not to have a meltdown, they are usually quite eager to accommodate the request. Then let things follow the plan that you state above. Right before the food comes, take your child for a little walk. You can go to the potty, you can go outside and look at the shrubs that are planted outside or you can take a little tour and show your toddler where you go to pay, what door the waiters go thru to get the food and point out interesting things like light fixtures or wall art. Then go back to your seat and finish your mealtime.
Remember that toddlers will not tolerate endless conversation. So if you want to go out for a long discussion and several cups of coffee, get a babysitter.

Fast Food
If you are going to a fast food restaurant that has a play yard then let your child play first. This is a great spot for you to relax and allow your child to play. Do not get into a power play over three chicken nuggets and force your child to eat them before going on the playground. The food often comes in a box or bag so you can take it home and eat it later. If you are saying to yourself that your child would not eat unless you make them eat first, then read on. It does not matter if your child misses out on three chicken nuggets and some fries. Have a nutritious dinner that night or let them snack on the fries on the way home. Do not sit them right next to children having fun on a playground and force them to eat fried foods. Let them play and take the food with you when you go.

Going to the Grocery Store
Going to the grocery store can be incredibly frustrating with one toddler, throw in a few more children and it could be chaos. Children want to know what to expect and what is expected of them.

What to say: In the car prior to entering the grocery store remind the children what will happen. “We are going into the grocery store and I want you to ride in the cart without complaint. I want you to help me pick out some foods because you are a great helper. If Mommy says  it means :No . Our household rules apply here. Obey Mommy and Daddy, Do not hurt yourself and do not hurt others. That means no screaming and no whining. Let’s have fun. I like being at the store with you.”
While in the store you can say “You get what you get and you don’t pitch a fit” (That is the official southern version).

What to do:
First of all, place your child in the proper seat. It is not advisable to allow your toddler to walk thru the store on their own. They may want to get down but if we can enlist their help right away, they will often stay put. Pick up colorful vegetables and ask them which one. Drive the buggy close enough to the produce so they can pick out an apple and drop it in the bag. Select two cans of green beans and let your toddler pick one. Make them a part of the process. If you have coupons, let them help you to look for the color product that matches the coupon. When you say “no” mean it and move on.

Remember if your toddler cries, it is more likely that other people understand then it is that they are annoyed. Either way, you are not responsible for strangers, you are responsible for your child and if your refusal to get sugary snacks elicits a tantrum, just move on and continue shopping as if nothing is happening. If you give in to the crying or tantrum then you are teaching your toddler to continue that behavior - because it works. A few trips to the grocery store where their tantrums do not change your behavior will improve the overall experience in the long run. And we have to go here at least once a week, so be careful.

It's High Time for Tea, Goodbye "Lazy Bean"!

Now I will see if any of you are actually reading my blog: If you know me, you know that I drank lots of coffee and frequented joints like Lazy Bean, where North Jersyers flock to like mad for addictive caffeinated granules in frozen form, with lots of sweet attached. I have cut out coffee entirely. I don't own coffee in my house anymore and I bought several different types of tea to make the switch. I want to see if it makes a difference in my skin over time (according to renowned dermatologist Nicholas Perricone, MD), coffee is a no-no when it comes to wrinkle wreckage. I also want to see if my migraines are fewer and farther between as a result. I find that coffee makes my heart race and makes me feel a little anxious too. If I go above 2 cups, I shake like a leaf. Write to me if you experience the same. Coffee, tea or me? I'll take the latter two of the 3.

Annoyed with secondary ticket market? Enter LiveStub.com, the panacea...

Morten Lund, investor behind Skype, kickstarts LiveStub.com

Morten Lund, the Danish investor who helped to propel the VoIP communications service Skype to worldwide success, has turned his sights on the business of reselling tickets by putting his financial muscle behind LiveStub.com, a new web site designed to revolutionize the secondary ticket industry.

When Levi Bergovoy launched LiveStub with Michael Hershfield in January, the duo wanted to simplify the secondary ticket market for both buyers and sellers. Other ticket resale sites tack on additional fees of up to 25 percent that cut into sellers’ profits and raise costs for buyers. LiveStub allows users to post their listings for free, cutting out what Hershfield calls “glorified middlemen.”

“We wanted to bring some order and make it as efficient and easy as possible for people to sell tickets,” Hershfield said, adding that “Unlike other sites, LiveStub has zero commission on tickets posted by fans.”

It was Bergovoy’s strategy of making LiveStub efficient, easy, and free-to-post that attracted Angel investor Morten Lund, who in the past invested in the zero-commission online stock trading site Zecco.

”It is time for a 'fan driven ticket site' that was truly created with the needs of the fans, both buyers and sellers, in mind," stated Lund, who has been described in business circles as an “archangel investor,” startup “ideologist” and “visionary.” “By offering a platform that quickly and efficiently connects buyers and sellers based on location, and does not attach inflated fees for either party, LiveStub will help grow the secondary ticket market amongst the general public,” Lund said.

Lund has co-invested in 80 high-tech start ups in the last decade. Skype, bought by eBay for $2.6 billion in 2005, is the most famous of his ventures. Lund’s investment in LiveStub will quickly propel it to the top of a secondary ticket market that sees almost $5 billion in annual sales.

“Morten Lund is recognized as one of the premiere angel investors in the world,” Hershfield said. “We are lucky to have him onboard and can only grow from here.”
Bergovoy and Hershfield have built LiveStub on four principles to simplify the secondary ticket market and separate LiveStub from its competitors:

Cost: LiveStub allows sellers to list their tickets easily and quickly at no cost.

Transparency: LiveStub will provide the intelligent tools to ensure that sellers list their tickets at the best prices.

Functionality: features make it easier for buyers to quickly find the best tickets at the best prices and LiveStub will ensure that fans find additional events both now and in the future.

Communication: LiveStub will provide buyers with the best tools to connect with sellers directly.

Visitors will find a host of features that set LiveStub above other ticket sites. The site’s geo-location feature tracks each user’s IP address to tailor each visit for that specific user, as well as remember preferences and recent searches for future use.

Using a formula based on the number of searches, number of tickets posted, and number of user inquiries, LiveStub can determine the most popular events in each user’s area, making the site an invaluable resource for people to find out what events are coming to their communities.

A feature that will save buyers time and money is LiveStub’s LivePrice/Ticket Evaluator, which allows users to find out what their tickets are actually worth on the secondary market.

All this is part of Bergovoy and Hershfield’s goal to make the secondary ticket market “Fast, efficient, and transparent” with LiveStub.com and the help of its new Angel investor.

Are We on the Right Track?

When It Comes to Education, Are We On the Right Track?
I’m no expert on the elementary school system, just a product of the classroom

by Shira Hirschman Weiss

Michele leaned over in her chair, hunched her shoulders and gave me a quizzical raised-eyebrow look.

“What are you doing in this class?” she asked. “You know more Hebrew than anyone else here.”

This was a humble statement to be uttered by my popular sixth grade classmate. She was never made fun of for being in the “lowest” class. At eleven she looked exactly like Brooke Shields in Pretty Baby. In my own awkward pre-teen years, I could not rely on my looks to save my reputation. I was placed in the lowest class in first grade and it seemed as if the school had pigeon-holed me, banishing me to this class for eternity (this is not an exaggerated feeling when you are in sixth grade). My self-confidence was shaken and since the majority of “the clique” of popular kids was in the highest class, I felt excluded from my peers.

Despite feeling socially challenged, I became increasingly confident in my academic abilities and increasing knowledge base, yet somehow I could not escape my fate of being in the lowest class. This made me angry and I wanted out. I wanted to be popular and if not popular, respected for my achievements. I had almost won a grade spelling bee and a poetry contest. Did that not earn me points for promotion to the next level? My creative writing was openly praised by the Language Arts teacher, yet I was stuck in the lowest English class as well!

I bravely brought my predicament to the attention of the school principal, the same school principal who only seemed to play basketball with “the clique.”

“Mrs. K. decided the classes,” was his answer.

Mrs. K.? Mrs. K.? I racked my brain for an explanation to this. Mrs. K. was the match teacher. How could Mrs. K. have known where to place me in Language Arts, History, Hebrew and Judaic subjects? I was disconcerted by this piece of information. Math happened to be my weakest subject, but did Mrs. K. have proof linking poor mathematical abilities to difficulties tackling other subjects? I tried to discuss the issue further with the school principal, but I came up short. (In later years, Mrs. K. went on to become Assistant Principal of the school, so there must have been a reason for her deciding the tracks, though I still strongly assert that she was not present to see my performance in other subjects.)

The explanation the principal had given me was not very logical, yet my arguments were caught in my throat. After all, I was eleven and he (probably in his thirties at the time) was ancient. In my childish mind, he should be revered as a knowledgeable elder. He obviously knew more than me about educational tracks and where I should and should not be placed.

Looking back, I could have said more, or at least, had my parents intervene and try to plead my case.

Fast forward to the present, I have two young children of my own now and my hope (which increases when I consider the exorbitant tuition I will be paying for private school) is that a well thought-out system will be in place, one that not only considers where my children are right now, but where they might go and what they are capable of becoming. I am hoping for a system that pushes them, in the appropriate way and in the proper direction, a system that considers their improvements and achievements as well as what the school’s recognition of these achievements will mean to their self-worth and self-confidence.

This is my hope because I never truly left grade school behind as I continually strive for improvement. There are many times when I wonder “Am I on the right track?” My inner child often engineers my thoughts today, causing me to periodically reassess my developments and achievements, possibly to compensate for an administration that was unable to promise that it would do the same.

5 Tips for Healthy Bones

One of the authors of "The Gene Makeover: The 21st Century Anti-Aging Breakthrough," renowned orthopedic surgeon and inventor of a form of artificial knee, Fred Buechel Sr. MD, gives the following tips for heathy bones:

Feed your Bones by Making Wise Food Choices
Load your Bones by Exercising 2-3 times per Week
Nourish your Bones by Keeping Blood Vessels Healthy
Assist your Bones by Maintaining a Balanced pH Level
Supplement Your Bones Twice a Day

Nutrition:
Healthy bones require proper amounts of protein, calcium, magnesium and organic phosphates to mature, and remain strong. Consider eating foods that are rich in these nutrients such as spinach, sardines (with bones), lean meats and poultry, as well as, small amounts of low-fat dairy products. Organic products are preferred.

Exercise:
Load bearing exercises, such as push-ups for upper extremities and leg-presses for lower extremities, combined with abdominal crunches and back extensions stimulate our body’s long bones and spine to absorb the nutrients necessary to create increased bone density. Without 2 to 3 times weekly loading exercise (walking for 30 minutes is also great), our bone density becomes less and our bones are weakened. A severe state of this weakness is called, ‘Osteoporosis”. Routine exercise helps prevent osteoporosis by stimulating our bones to absorb calcium and magnesium.

Healthy Blood Vessels:
Bones are living hard tissues that require nourishment through tiny blood vessels in their Haversian Canals. Bone cells are constantly being generated by osteoblasts and are being resorbed by osteoclasts. Without healthy (non-clogged) blood vessels, this bone turnover process can be upset in favor of resportion, which can lead to ‘brittle bones’ or osteoporosis. Foods that are rich in essential fatty acids and Vitamin K2, such as salmon, sardines and green leafy vegetables, help to promote healthy endothelial linings of our blood vessels, which are essential in providing nutrition to our bones, not to mention helping to prevent heart attacks and strokes.

Alkaline Body Balance:
Neutral to alkaline body pH allows bone forming, while acid pH tends to promote bone resorption. Consider testing urine pH with test strips in the morning to evaluate your level of acidity (pH). If too acid (pH less that 5.5), consider taking ½ to 1.5 tsp. of Baking Soda mixed in 8 oz. water at bedtime, until your morning pH is neutral (pH = 7) or slightly alkaline (pH = 7.2 – 7.5) Consider reducing your intake of acid forming foods and liquids, such as red meat, coffee, soda and alcohol, while trying to eat more salads and alkaline forming vegetables, like broccoli, spinach and cucumber.

Supplements:
Just like all other living tissues in our bodies, bones require basic levels of hormones, vitamins, minerals and amino acids to remain health and strong. Unfortunately, our modern diets, lifestyle and exposure to environmental toxins, creates multiple nutritional deficiencies and promotes oxidative stress at a cellular level, including our bones. Modern food processing depletes many of the essential nutrients that we need which compounds our deficiency problems. Therefore, it is essential to consider supplementing our inadequate diets with nutritional support. As we age, we develop hormonal decline as well as a decline in absorption from our gastro-intestinal tract. For these reasons, consider supplementing deficient hormones (bioidentical only) and vital nutrients to optimize bone cell function. Aside from a nutrient dense morning (AM) and evening (PM) formulation, consider cellular repair products (nutrients) that control Methylation, inflammation, Glycation, oxidation and DNA damage; the 5 basic metabolic processes that are involved in bone cell function. Specific nutrient supplementation should include scientifically proven amounts of water soluble and fat soluble vitamins, sufficient calcium (1200/day for women), magnesium 500-1000mg/day, Vitamin D3 (1000-2000 IU/day), Vitamin K2 (1 mg/day), and other botanicals and minerals found to stimulate optimal health.

"Flushing"

My husband and I often joke about the fact that I dated lunatics in my single days. Case in point: I had been dating one said lunatic for close to 9 months or so when we met Said Lunatic's lawyer-colleague in a restaurant. Colleague later asked SL (Said Lunatic) about moi. SL felt compelled to tell Colleague all about me, but being highly meticulous and known for being an always-correct-infallable-genius, SL asked me where my mom worked because he had to get all the details in about my fam. "Flushing, Queens," I replied without much pre-pondering (I mean, after all, who exactly "ponders" that sort of detail?). SL let Colleague know. Later that night as I was hanging with SL, he turned to me and asked "Where, again, did you say that your mom works?"

"Forest Hills, Queens" I replied without thinking twice.

"You *(%(#*#%* )#@ %$*@%*##!" (use your imagination) he replied, his face turning red, smoke coming out of his ears. "YOU TOLD ME 'FLUSHING', NOT FOREST HILLS, AND YOU MADE ME - SOMEONE KNOWN FOR ALWAYS BEING CORRECT AND PRECISE - LOOK LIKE AN IDIOT IN FRONT OF MY COLLEAGUE!"

I left confused and unable to form words. Said Lunatic would go from loving BF to raving mad man in a millisecond quite often, but this was the straw that finally broke the camel's back. Very soon after, I got over my initial shock and dumped him.

When I finally met my husband (long after consulting with the post office that yes, Forest Hills is part of Flushing) who is NOT SL, I was able to realize upon reflection: If you have to measure the distance between Flushing and Forest Hills, you'll never get very far in a "relationship."

Troubled Waters

When you think of Israel as an American who has visited the land, pollution is furthest from your mind. The land is beautiful and the beaches are a can-not-miss -- or are they? Last year, a report by Israel's Zalul Association for Environmental protection uncovered polluted waterways where bathers and tourists go. This year's report by Zalul discusses the economic effects of polluting. Hey, take care of Israel folks! - Let's preserve our Land of Milk & Honey.

Read on:

'Gov't losing 100s of millions by not collecting pollution fees'

Aug. 6, 2008, Ehud Zion Waldoks , THE JERUSALEM POST

The government is losing between NIS 200 million and NIS 900m. per year by not implementing a discharge fee for companies that have permits to dump sewage into the Mediterranean Sea, according to the annual State of the Sea Report released by Zalul on Wednesday.

Zalul, an NGO committed to protecting Israel's seas, based its figures on an analysis of eight of the highest-polluting companies who received permits to dump into the sea. Without a discharge fee, Zalul charged, these and other companies were essentially receiving a subsidy on the backs of the government and the environment.

According to Zalul, the Environmental Protection Ministry has the authority to institute such a fee. The permitting committee also has the responsibility to refuse to grant a permit until Best Alternative Technologies (BAT) have been installed to prevent as much pollution as possible.

Zalul charged that the committee was not equipped to determine whether companies had actually done so before issuing a permit.

This year's report focused solely on economic aspects connected with the seas.
Zalul analyzed the revenues of the eight companies - Haifa Chemicals, Oil Refineries Ltd. (BAZAN), Carmel Olefins Ltd., Gadot Biochemical Industries Ltd., Israel Chemicals Ltd. (ICL) - Fertilizers, Oil Refineries Ashdod, Makhteshim-Agan Industries Ltd., and Delta Galil - to arrive at the NIS 200m.-NIS 900m. figures. The lower sum represents more than the basic budget of the entire Environmental Protection Ministry.

The organization calculated a discharge fee ranging from NIS 4 to NIS 16.75 per cubic meter. The former represents the amount charged by municipal sewage treatment facilities, while the latter represents the municipal rate plus the median fee of the Ramat-Hovav Biological Treatment Facility "Tibam" for pre-treating highly polluted effluent, according to the report.

A NIS 16.75-per-cu.m. fee would generate NIS 220m. per year from those eight companies alone. Moreover, the report said, such fees would represent less than 1 percent of revenue for most of those eight companies.

The report concluded that implementing such a fee was a useful tool and deterrent. In addition to its revenue potential for the government, a fee would encourage companies to institute BAT and thus reduce its fees. They argued, therefore, that any fee be higher than the cost of installing BAT.

In addition to the implementation of the discharge fee "as is instructed by Article 9A of the Law for Pollution Prevention from Land-Based Resources," Zalul recommended using the fee money "to create a fund to protect and improve the coastal environment."

It also suggested that the permit committee "demand from those requesting a permit to discharge into the sea to invest a reasonable percentage of their yearly earnings in [BAT] requirement as part of the condition for permit issuance."

The Environmental Protection Ministry responded in a statement that "the committee for issuing permits has incorporated a BAT principle for years in the framework of issuing permits which accords with the law to prevent sea pollution from land-based sources."
It added that "a draft regulation on the topic of 'a discharge fee' was prepared and circulated about a month ago for comments to the relevant government ministries and environmental organizations. In the coming month, the draft will be sent for approval to the Justice and Finance ministries in preparation for approval by the Knesset."

The most recent comptroller report concluded that the ministry was very slow in collecting fines for pollution. In its defense, the ministry has continually cited its small budget and lack of sufficient manpower. Also, ministry director-general Shai Avital told the Knesset Internal Affairs and Environment Committee recently, the ministry was still reeling from the political appointments scandal under MK Tzahi Hanegbi (Kadima) and was scared of its own shadow even though most of the appointees had been removed already.

Suracell? Sure-As-Hell!

Through my PR work, I learned about something really cool and seemingly futuristic, but it's actually available NOW. You can go to an MD or medi-spa for a Suracell DNA swab kit, you then take a cheek swab and biomarker at home, send the kit back to Suracell, their CLIA-certified lab analyzes your DNA, and a physician customizes a nutritional supplement regimen (am and pm core supplements) for you on the basis of your DNA. Whereas companies like 23AndMe and Navigenics were handed a "cease and desist" for being Direct-to-Consumer, Suracell's offering is not DTC, nor does it deal with the dreaded "diagnosing." Rather, Suracell measures how healthfully you're going to age and a regimen is developed to help you age better. Check out http://www.agebetternow.com/ to find a Suracell medi-spa in your area.

Crocs-Rx

There was an article in Newsweek making fun of Crocs, but I have to say, I would LOVE to do PR for Crocs-Rx, the most comfortable type of shoe when your forced to stand around for a while (like waiting for your 5 year old to finish circling the block with his bike). With my flat feet, I need as much cushioning and support (and for there to be a large amount of seperation between the sole of my foot and the pavement) as possible. Below are the features and benefits, but I aint sayin' wear em to the ballroom!

- Shock-absorbing, anatomically designed footbed relieves stress on feet, knees, hips and lower back and also helps relieve plantar fasciitis and heel pain.
- Wide toe box helps alleviate pressure and tightness on sensitive feet.
- Air portals help maintain a cool, dry shoe interior.
- Slip-resistant and non-marking outsole provides excellent traction.
- A protective toecap protects sensitive forefoot against stubs and bruising.
- Elevated heel rim supports and protects the heel and secures the fit.
- Convertible strap can be worn up or down, giving you a comfortable fit.
- Croslite, with antimicrobial silver, maintains a fresh, healthy foot environment.
- Side air portals keep feet cool and dry.

I wrote a novel years ago

I wrote a novel years ago, all in one summer. I sat in my dad's office doing medical billing after the first PR firm where I worked closed down. I was bored between calls to insurance companies and mindless data entry. I took out a little notebook and started writing. I wrote and wrote and wrote until little notebooks were everywhere - blue, red, yellow. Boredom turned to excitement - I could not wait to get to my mindless medical billing job. Then I spent evenings transcribing, inputing the notebooks onto my computer. I called the novel "Falling Backwards" and it is loosely based on some of my past experiences. My heroine also hated elementary school and blamed problems with confidence in her adult life on earlier experiences. I was passionate about the novel, but then, one day, I found a real job. It kept me busy and I got busier and busier...I never did anything with the novel. This weekend, I plan to find the novel on my old computer and see if I can resurrect it and if there is any hope for getting it published. It would be a shame to let "one boring summer years ago" be remembered as just that.

Sugar Causes Wrinkles?!

So, I was dismayed to learn that there's real scientific basis to the statement "Sugar Causes Wrinkles." Here is what world renowned anti-aging physician Vincent Giampapa, MD, the author of 5 books on aging including, The Gene Makeover: The 21st Century Anti-Aging Solution has to say about it:

Sugar is the worst thing for your skin and modern research attests to this fact. Every Doughnut, candy bar and soda adds to a toxic excess of blood sugar or glucose that shows up on your face! Frequent consumption of refined carbohydrates, which are ubiquitous in the American diet, can bump up cortisol levels. This can interfere with hormone balance and increase inflammation

Sugar also raises blood levels of insulin, the hormone that regulates insulin receptors to glucose. Glycation and cross-linking of proteins is stepped up, collagen weakens, and wrinkles deepen. Glycation ultimately causes production of extremely toxic by-products known as advanced glycation end products (AGEs).

Sugar causes fat to accumulate in your belly, making it harder to maintain a trim appearance, particularly if you are over 40. As your waistline girth increases, so does your risk of heart attack and stroke.

When you look in the mirror, you’ll see fine lines appear that deepen over time. Sugary foods and alcohol will cause the skin above and under your eyes to puff up. Puffiness is also increased if you aren’t drinking enough water. (Note: You especially need to increase your intake of fresh mineral water when traveling.)

Amazingly, following anti-aging dietary guidelines (such as those detailed in The Anti-Aging Solution and The Gene Makeover: The 21st Century Anti-Aging Breakthrough), will reduce the lines and puffiness within just a few days.

Here are some tips for changing your nutrition habits to makeover your skin:

- increase your intake of lean protein

- increase your intake of foods high in omega-3, omega-6 and omega-9 oils (fish, nuts, seeds, dark green vegetables, olive, flax and hemp oils)

- use only the highest quality (and darkest) of oils when cooking

- Be sure to have antioxidants in your diet: these free-radical fighters help keep sugar from attaching to proteins, so replenishing their supply by eating more antioxidant-rich fruits, nuts, and vegetables (i.e. cranberries, walnuts, and red bell peppers) and having antioxidants in your nutritional supplements (Suracell’s line of am and pm core supplements have the proper amount to supplement a balanced diet) is the correct route toward younger looking skin.

- No one knows the exact amount of sugar that will cause wrinkles, however, anything that raises blood sugar levels significantly will predispose you to winkles, through a process called glycation. Gylcation is one of the five gene-linked processes tested at Suracell. Even a little bit of sugar is not good for your health or your skin. 2-3 teaspoons (in one dose) will predispose you to wrinkles. A better alternative is stevia, pumkin pentose or erythritol. (Shira's note: Where do I find pumpkin pentose and erythritol?! Anybody know?)

- Control stress (Shira's note: easier said than done, but necessary)- stress can also lead to elevated cortisol levels, so controlling oxidative stress is also crucial in reducing skin wrinkling and puffiness.

The Suracell® nutritional supplements (comprised of am and pm core supplements) are customized to the individual’s personal genetic health. Glycation is one of the 5 key healthy aging factors that is measured and factored in for one’s personalized Suracell nutritional supplement regimen.

Those on the Suracell program have reported improvement in skin tone and elasticity as one of the first signs that these supplements are working. (This goes along with increased energy levels during the day and better ability to fall asleep at night.) I'm my own boss!

I love being my own boss - I only have to answer to myself and be my own critic. I don't get scolded or threatened when I have to take my 2 year old to the pediatrician. I get all my work done, but most importantly, I TRUST myself to get all my work done. Being your own boss is not for the undisciplined people out there, but it works for me after a stint with a micro-managerial supervisor who had anger management issues to the Nth degree. I am a bit harder on myself than most bosses would probably be, but I don't mind - because it's just me!

MomsOnCall

Do you know about the "Moms on Call"? They're a pediatric nurse (and mom) duo that help parents with basic baby care connundrums - you know, the kind you don't want to keep bugging the pediatrician about?!

Check out their web site http://www.momsoncall.com/ and their FANTASTIC online toddler seminar!

Their book (see attached photo) is a new mom essential. You can buy that at their site or on Amazon.com.

Aging Better Now

I represent world renowned anti-aging physician Vincent Giampapa, MD, author of the best-seller The Gene Makeover: The 21st Century Anti-Aging Solution. In this book, Dr. Giampapa discusses eating for healthier aging and getting a nutritional supplement regimen customized according to one's unique DNA. Dr. Giampapa also founded the nutritional supplement line Suracell, which is comprised of am and pm core supplements for healthier aging. Here's how Suracell works: Your medical professional or medi-spa gives you a DNA swab kit, you take a cheek swab and biomarker (fancy way of saying urine sample) and Suracell's CLIA-certified lab measure 5 key healthy aging factors. On the basis of those factors, a specific nutritional supplement package is designed to help you age better so you're not simply a victim of your genetic inheritance. Skeptical? Understandable. This is very cutting edge and it seems futuristic, but a study will soon be released showing that "nutrigenomics" (AKA eating for your genes) has true merit. Imagine that years from now we'll all know exactly which nutritional supplements and foods to eat according to our personal genetic health profiles/our individual genetic needs. The two web sites for Suracell are http://www.agebetternow.com/ and http://www.suracell.com/. The web site for Dr. Giampapa's book is http://www.thegenemakeover.com/. The book is also available on Amazon.com.
